Money between family members: tracking it without the hurt feelings

Simple record-keeping habits that make debts between parents, siblings, partners and relatives easier to talk about and less likely to cause resentment.

Debts within a family are the hardest to talk about. Help given to a sibling, support from parents, payments between partners… Most of it is never written down and stays "between us". Years later everyone remembers a different number.

Why keep records within the family?

Keeping records isn't distrust; it's not trusting memory. In family loans a record:

  • Prevents resentment. "I gave you far more than that" ends with a number.
  • Separates gifts from loans. Agreeing up front which money doesn't need to come back puts everyone at ease.
  • Keeps things fair later on. Large support given to one sibling may matter down the line.

Three steps to the conversation

  1. Loan or gift? Before any money changes hands, say clearly whether it will be paid back.
  2. The due date can be flexible, but not vague. Instead of "when things get better", agree on a frame like "by the end of the year".
  3. How it gets paid. In one go, or small monthly amounts? For monthly payments a recurring record makes life easier.

Between partners

Couples who share a budget build up small debts too: one pays the bill, the other the groceries. Keeping these in a monthly list and talking about the net at month end is far calmer than settling up after every purchase. Share the list with your partner and you both see the same number (when a shared debt list helps).

Tracking on behalf of ageing parents

If you keep track of your parents' money matters with other people, open a separate list for them. It won't mix with your own records, and you can share it with a sibling if needed.

With Sudeb

In Sudeb you can open a "Family" list and add each family member as a person. The person screen shows every debt, receivable and the net difference between you. Partial payments are kept with their dates, so nobody has to say "I forgot".
